Key takeaway
Springboard+ offers free and subsidised higher education courses in areas of skills shortage. Here's who qualifies and how to apply.
What is Springboard+?
Springboard+ is a government-funded programme offering free higher education courses at universities, institutes of technology, and further education colleges across Ireland. Courses focus on sectors where Ireland has skills shortages — technology, healthcare, green economy, finance, and more. It's one of the best free upskilling opportunities available to adults in Ireland.
Who can apply?
Springboard+ has two main eligibility categories:
- Unemployed: Anyone who is unemployed and in receipt of (or exempt from) a social welfare payment
- Returners: People returning to the workforce after a period away (e.g. after caring responsibilities, illness, or a career break). Returners can be in part-time employment.
- Employed: Some courses are open to employed people, but these typically have a partial fee (usually 10% of the course cost).
What courses are available?
Courses range from Higher Certificate level (NFQ Level 6) to Postgraduate Diploma level (NFQ Level 9). Popular areas include:
- Software development and coding
- Data analytics and business intelligence
