Disability Allowance (DA) is a weekly payment from the Department of Social Protection for people aged 16–66 with a disability that substantially restricts their ability to work. The disability must be expected to last at least one year. Non-EU/EEA nationals must have a legal right to reside and work in Ireland to qualify — a condition called the Habitual Residence Condition (HRC) also applies.
The maximum personal rate is approximately €232 per week (2024), with additional payments possible for adult dependants and child dependants. Apply through your local Intreo Centre or online at mywelfare.ie.
People with disabilities may qualify for a medical card (covering GP visits, hospital care, and prescriptions free of charge) through the means test or through specific Long-Term Illness (LTI) scheme. The LTI scheme covers the cost of drugs and medicines for specific conditions including epilepsy, cerebral palsy, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis, without the full medical card means test.
Disability Allowance recipients and many people with long-term disabilities are entitled to a Free Travel Pass, allowing unlimited free travel on public transport across Ireland (bus, rail, and Luas). Apply through the Department of Social Protection.
If you have paid sufficient PRSI contributions in Ireland, you may qualify for Invalidity Pension — a higher-rate payment for people permanently incapable of work due to illness or disability. Unlike Disability Allowance, it's not means-tested. Qualifying requires at least 260 PRSI contributions paid, with 48 contributions in the last complete tax year.
The Reasonable Accommodation Fund provides grants to employers to adapt the workplace for employees with disabilities. The Wage Subsidy Scheme provides financial support to employers who hire people with disabilities. EmployAbility is a national employment service for people with disabilities — free for both job seekers and employers.
The Housing Adaptation Grant provides grants of up to €30,000 for home modifications for people with a disability — ramps, stairlifts, accessible bathrooms. Apply through your local authority. The Mobility Aids Grant (up to €6,000) covers minor works.
