Free English classes through ETBs

Education and Training Boards (ETBs) across Ireland offer free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes funded by the government. These are available to anyone legally resident in Ireland — you don't need to be unemployed or on social welfare to attend. Classes are offered at various levels from complete beginner to advanced. Contact your local ETB to find courses in your area — ETBs exist in every county.

ESOL classes cover reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Many programmes also offer digital literacy alongside English skills.

English for the Workplace

Some ETBs and community organisations offer English for the Workplace programmes specifically aimed at people who need to improve their professional English — report writing, emails, presentations, and job interview language. These are particularly useful if your conversational English is good but your written or formal English needs development.

Private English schools

Ireland has a large English-language teaching sector — over 50 accredited English language schools, mainly in Dublin, Cork, and Galway. These schools are accredited by Accreditation Ireland (formerly MEI). Courses range from general English to exam preparation (IELTS, Cambridge B2/C1, TOEFL). Fees vary widely — shop around and check the accreditation status of any school before enrolling.

IELTS and English proficiency tests

Many professions, universities, and visa applications in Ireland require a formal English language qualification. The most commonly accepted are:

  • IELTS — internationally recognised, widely accepted in Ireland for professional registration (nursing, medicine) and university entry
  • Cambridge B2 First / C1 Advanced — well-recognised for university and professional purposes
  • Trinity ISE — accepted for some Irish visa purposes

IELTS exams are offered at multiple locations across Ireland. Book via the British Council or IDP Ireland websites.

Free online resources

  • Duolingo — free app, good for vocabulary and basic grammar
  • BBC Learning English — free, excellent for all levels, strong on pronunciation
  • SOLAS eLearning — free online courses developed for Irish ESOL learners
