Ireland offers a range of supports for families, from child benefit payments to maternity and paternity leave. Understanding what you're entitled to from the start can make a significant difference — especially in the first months after arriving with children or expecting a baby.
Child Benefit is a monthly payment to the parents or guardians of children under 16, or under 18 if in full-time education or with a disability. It is paid regardless of income and is not means-tested. EU/EEA nationals and many other residents are entitled to it. Apply through the Department of Social Protection using the CB1 form.
Employed mothers are entitled to 26 weeks of maternity leave, with an option for a further 16 weeks of unpaid leave. Maternity Benefit is paid by the Department of Social Protection at a flat rate, provided you have enough PRSI contributions. Fathers and partners are entitled to 2 weeks of paid paternity leave.
Childcare in Ireland is expensive by European standards. The National Childcare Scheme (NCS) provides subsidies to reduce costs, with both universal and income-based subsidies available. The Free Preschool Year (ECCE scheme) provides a free preschool place for children aged 2 years and 8 months to 5 years and 6 months.
Children under 8 are entitled to free GP visits under the GP visit card for children scheme. All children are also entitled to free developmental checks through the HSE public health nursing service. Emergency care for children is provided at children's hospitals — in Dublin, this is Children's Health Ireland (CHI) at Crumlin and Temple Street.
