Ireland is historically a Catholic country — about 70% of the population identified as Catholic in the 2022 census, though active practice is declining, particularly among younger generations. However, decades of immigration have made Ireland considerably more religiously diverse. Islam is now the second largest religion, followed by Church of Ireland (Anglican), Orthodox Christianity, and a range of other faiths.
Catholic Mass is celebrated daily in most towns across Ireland. The parish system means virtually every area has a local Catholic church. Mass times are published on masstimes.ie, which covers the whole country. Larger urban parishes often have multicultural Masses in different languages — Filipino communities in particular have well-established parish groups in many cities.
The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland in Clonskeagh, Dublin, is the largest mosque in Ireland and a hub for the Muslim community — it includes a mosque, education centre, and halal shop. The Mosque on the South Circular Road in Dublin 8 (Portobello) is another well-established community mosque. Cork, Galway, and Limerick also have mosques. The Islam Ireland website lists mosques and prayer times across the country.
The Church of Ireland (Anglican) has churches in most towns, particularly in areas with strong historic Protestant communities. Methodist, Presbyterian, and Baptist churches are present in urban areas. ireland.anglican.org has a parish finder.
The Hindu community in Ireland has grown significantly with Indian immigration. The Hindu Cultural Centre of Ireland in Portmarnock, Dublin, is the main Hindu temple. Smaller Hindu prayer rooms and community groups exist in Cork and other cities. Regular pujas and festivals are held throughout the year.
Ireland's Jewish community is small but active, centred mainly in Dublin. The Dublin Hebrew Congregation (Adelaide Road Synagogue) and Machzikei Hadass (Terenure Synagogue) serve the community. The Jewish Representative Council of Ireland can provide community contacts.
Several Buddhist centres operate in Ireland across different traditions — Theravada, Tibetan, and Zen. The Dublin Buddhist Centre (urban meditation) and Jampa Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre in Cavan are among the main centres.
